How to have a cooperative Home practice session?

-                Four reasons to practice
1.   Simply love the music, or fun playing
2.     Peer pressure
3.     Rewards and consequences
4.     Someone makes them to practice

-                Remember
o   Children like to PLAY an instrument, they don’t like to PRACTICE
§  The process of repetitive practice is biologically and psychologically opposed to a child’s nature

-                Teachers usually pay attention those issues during the lesson.
o   Praise with concrete detail. – But you don’t have detail the reason.
o   Just talk what is going on right now.
o   Explain as short as possible
o   Not praising their result, but praise their efforts and process
o   Do not praise too much
o   Praise as soon as students are able to do it.
o   Don't tell. Give suggestion, or ask.
o   Don’t be emotional.  If students cannot do it, they are not ready.
§  Simplify the issue.

-                Three important factor
o   Never lose self-control
§  Slow, quiet voice– don’t be emotional at all
§  Speak as short as possible – one sentence/word
o   Don’t tell, but give suggestions and ask until they get it
§  But focus only one issue.
o   Give them extra time to process
§  Provide quiet time to process
§  Don’t make them to do fast.  They need extra time to do things.
§  When doing any kind of new things, the brain must decipher a great deal of information simultaneously

If you frustrate, children are frustrated also.  When you frustrate, stop what you are doing, or tell children to do a different task.

Welcome note from Suzuki Coordinator, Aki Tanaka

Greetings and welcome to the first Suzuki newsletter of the 2014-2015 school year. I am pleased to start working at Sherwood and I look forward to meeting all students and parents. Please expect to see a newsletter from me every few weeks for all important program information.

Tami did an awesome job building the Suzuki program. We are hoping the program will grow even more, and together, we will build an even stronger Suzuki community. I also would like to acknowledge Aubrey Faith-Slaker for the interim Suzuki Coordinator last few months.  Without her, I would not able to have a smooth transition to start this position.

If you have any questions, concerns, or just want to say hi, please feel free to contact me at ntanaka@colum.edu or 312-369-3156. If you would like to meet in person, my office hours are Tuesday: 11:00-1:00PM, Friday: 11:30-1:30PM, and Saturday 8:30-12:30PM.
